OSHA Porta Potty Requirements for Oklahoma Construction Sites

What does OSHA require for jobsite toilets?

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(c) requires toilets on every construction site for employees. Table D-1 sets the count: 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers from 21 to 199, and 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers at 200 or more. Oklahoma follows federal OSHA for private employers.

Does OSHA require hand-washing stations on construction sites?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities when workers apply paints, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or handle other harmful contaminants. The facilities must be close to the work area and kept sanitary, with soap or cleanser and towels. Many general contractors require one station per site anyway.

See hand-wash station rental.

Does a mobile crew need a toilet?

Mobile crews with transportation available to a nearby toilet are exempt from Table D-1 under 1926.51(c)(4). A roofing or landscaping crew that moves between houses every day and has a truck can use nearby facilities. A crew that stays on one site for days needs its own unit.

How often should jobsite toilets be serviced?

Jobsite toilets must be kept sanitary. Industry practice, built into Table D-1's counts, is one service per week for a standard 40-hour crew. Crews larger than the table assumes, or summer heat in Oklahoma, call for two services a week. Every jobsite rental from us includes weekly service.

What do safety inspectors look for?

Safety inspectors look for enough units for the crew size, units within a reasonable walk of work areas, working door latches, toilet paper, a clean and serviced tank, and hand-washing where chemicals are used. A dated service record helps show compliance.
